PPL Electric Utilities is prepared for severe weather threat

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (June 19, 2025) – PPL Electric Utilities is closely monitoring forecasts for a round of severe weather set to bring strong winds and lightning to its entire service territory in central and eastern Pennsylvania on Thursday afternoon into the evening hours. Current forecasts call for the potential of 50-plus mph winds and lightning, as well as rainfall adding to already saturated ground throughout the area. PPL Electric is prepared and has over 250 lineworker crews ready to respond as safely and quickly as possible to any customer outages.

“The combination of high winds, lightning and rain could make for a powerful system to kick off the summer storm season,” said Christine Martin, president of PPL Electric Utilities. “PPL Electric wants customers to know that we are ready — we prepare year-round for severe weather and all its unpredictability. Our crews remain ready to work around the clock to help get customers back online as safely and efficiently as they can.”

Even with the best preparation, storms and severe weather can cause damage and result in outages. The Company has activated its storm response plans, which include:

  • Activating storm teams with additional personnel in the field, control centers and customer service centers across its 29-county territory.
  • Implementing 16-hour shifts for around-the-clock coverage.
  • Bringing in 82 additional crews from outside the company to assist in restoration efforts.

Customers are also encouraged to prepare for the storm. PPL Electric offers the following tips and reminders:

Stay connected:

Stay safe:

  • If you encounter a downed wire at any time, assume it’s energized and stay away. If you see one, report it immediately to PPL Electric.
  • Just in case you lose power, it’s good to have an emergency kit on hand with food, water, medication and any pet supplies you may need.
  • We encourage customers who have medical conditions requiring electricity to make arrangements in case of an emergency.
  • Make sure to keep phones and other mobile devices charged.
  • Remember that candles can start fires. If you lose power, use flashlights instead. If you use a generator to supply power during an outage, be sure to operate it outdoors.
  • For your safety and ours, please keep a safe distance from our crews.
