PPL Foundation today announced it is expanding the focus of its philanthropy to Rhode Island, seeking to support initiatives that strengthen communities served by Rhode Island Energy. 

PPL Foundation was established by PPL Corporation, Rhode Island Energy’s parent company, to support programs that improve lives in areas served by PPL’s utilities. Since 2015, it has awarded more than $20 million to nonprofit organizations making a difference in their local communities.

 

PPL Foundation will begin accepting applications through its Empowering Communities grant program Sept. 15. The program will provide grants of $1,000 to $50,000 to support nonprofits focused on education; diversity, equity and inclusion; and sustainable communities in Rhode Island.

 

“For over a century, PPL has strived to empower the communities we serve by delivering reliable energy service, philanthropic contributions and support for community development and education,” said Ryan Hill, president of the PPL Foundation. “With the addition of Rhode Island Energy to the PPL family of companies, we are proud to continue our legacy of corporate citizenship by supporting nonprofit organizations through the philanthropic efforts of the PPL Foundation.” 

 

In awarding Empowering Communities Grants, the PPL Foundation will focus on three areas: 

• Education – includes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), college and career readiness, summer learning and literacy.

• Diversity, equity, and inclusion – includes racial and social justice programs; minority-led organizations driving change; and empowerment programs for people of color, women, the disabled, LGBTQ and veterans.

• Sustainable communities – includes environmental conservation and education programs; community development programs; and career and small business incubators.

PPL Foundation will be accepting grant applications through Oct. 15, with grants awarded later this fall. Beginning in 2023, the Foundation expects to conduct two grant cycles each year to provide ample opportunities for nonprofit organizations seeking funding in the state.
