Rhode Island Energy Foundation Donates $50,000 to Rhode Island Community Food Bank to Support Urgent Community Needs

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November 3, 2025) – In response to the ongoing federal government shutdown and its growing impact on vulnerable Rhode Islanders, the Rhode Island Energy (RIE) Foundation today announced a $50,000 donation to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. The contribution will help ensure continued access to nutritious food for thousands of families facing increased hardship during this uncertain time.

“As federal support stalls, local organizations must step up, and the Rhode Island Energy Foundation is proud to do just that for the communities in which we live and serve,” said Greg Cornett, President of RIE and Vice President of the Rhode Island Energy Foundation. “The Rhode Island Community Food Bank is a lifeline for so many, and we know this donation will go a long way in helping them meet the rising demand for food assistance across the state.”

The federal government shutdown has disrupted a number of critical services and has left many families without the support they rely on. Food banks across the country are reporting increased need, and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank is no exception.

“In a time of great uncertainty, our member agencies are bracing to see more people than ever before in line for food assistance in the coming days and weeks,” said Melissa Cherney, CEO of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “We are so grateful for partners like the Rhode Island Energy Foundation who have recognized the incredible need we’re facing and are stepping up to help.”

Additionally, federal employees, federal contractors, and active-duty military personnel affected by the shutdown are encouraged to explore support options and sign up for assistance online.
