Rhode Island Energy Foundation doubles donation to Good Neighbor Energy Fund from $200,000 to $400,000

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 20, 2025) – The Rhode Island Energy Foundation is pleased to announce that it is doubling its annual donation to the Rhode Island Good Neighbor Energy Fund this year. This significant increase in the Foundation’s support complements Rhode Island Energy's strong commitment to assisting local families in need and strengthening the community.

The Good Neighbor Energy Fund, administered by United Way of Rhode Island, serves as a safety net for households in temporary crisis and having trouble paying their energy bills. Households in need of energy assistance are encouraged to call their local Community Action Program (CAP) agency to determine if they qualify for the Fund. CAP agencies help to determine eligibility based on total household income not exceeding 300 percent of the federal poverty level while being above the threshold for LIHEAP assistance. For example, the maximum household income for a family of four to be eligible is $93,600, while a household of six cannot exceed $125,880. Grants to individual households are determined by fuel type and need, with grant amounts up to $825 per season.

"We are deeply committed to supporting our community, especially during challenging times," said Greg Cornett, president of Rhode Island Energy and an officer of the RIE Foundation. "By doubling the foundation’s donation to the Good Neighbor Energy Fund, we hope to make a meaningful impact on the lives of our neighbors and help them navigate through financial hardships. This winter has been particularly cold, leading to higher utility bills and we want to help address affordability for all."

Cortney Nicolato, president and CEO of United Way of Rhode Island, added, "This generous contribution from Rhode Island Energy Foundation will significantly enhance our ability to support families in need. We are grateful for their continued partnership and dedication to our community."

The RIE Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization funded by shareowners of PPL Corporation, Rhode Island Energy’s parent company. Since 2022, the organization has awarded over $1 million in grants to organizations across Rhode Island.
