PROVIDENCE, R.I. (August 12, 2025) – Rhode Island Energy is continuing to improve safety, reliability, and system performance for nearly 1,800 customers across five neighborhoods in Portsmouth.

As beach homes and cottages continue to be upgraded and converted to full time residences, Portsmouth has seen exponential load growth over the last 20 to 30 years. To meet this demand, Rhode Island Energy is continuing a multi-year effort in Portsmouth to support increased load demand, improve voltage quality, and harden the electrical system.

Rhode Island Energy crews will be working to improve nearly 3.5 miles of electric equipment in The Hummock’s, Island Park, Common Fence Point, The Point Section, and Portsmouth Village neighborhoods. Work in these areas will include the installation of larger poles and upgraded electrical infrastructure such as wires and transformers. This project is expected to be completed over a 3-to-5-year timeframe.

“Meeting the needs of the communities we serve is paramount to being a great partner, and keeping the energy flowing,” said Greg Cornett, President of Rhode Island Energy. “Completing these upgrades in Portsmouth will help to improve safety, reliability, and ensure our neighbors are set up for success for years to come.”
