Rhode Island Energy encourages customers and all Rhode Islanders in temporary crisis to apply for resources still available from the Rhode Island Good Neighbor Energy Fund

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 3, 2025) – Rhode Island Energy urges qualified customers who need assistance paying a current energy expense to take advantage of the Rhode Island Good Neighbor Energy Fund (GNEF).

Administered by the United Way of Rhode Island, the GNEF is a resource available to Rhode Islanders to help them pay their energy bills. Households in need of energy assistance are encouraged to call their local Community Action Program (CAP) agency to determine if they qualify for the Fund.  CAP agencies help to determine eligibility based on total household income not exceeding 300 percent of the federal poverty level while being above the threshold for assistance through the low-income energy assistance program (LIHEAP). For example, the maximum household income for a family of four to be eligible is $93,600, while a household of six cannot exceed $125,880. Grants to individual households are determined by need and by fuel type, which can include delivered fuels, with grant amounts up to $825 per season.

“We are deeply committed to assisting local families in need and strengthening the community,” said Rhode Island Energy President Greg Cornett. “This winter has been particularly cold, leading to higher energy bills, and we want to help address affordability for all. Not everyone knows about the Good Neighbor Energy Fund and we want to make sure anyone who is eligible knows that funds are still available and can bring relief. We encourage customers to take advantage of them.”

The Rhode Island Energy (RIE) Foundation doubled its annual commitment to the Rhode Island Good Neighbor Energy Fund this year to $400,000. The RIE Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization funded by shareowners of PPL Corporation, Rhode Island Energy’s parent company. Since 2022, the organization has awarded over $1 million in grants to organizations across Rhode Island.
