Rhode Island Energy nears completion of major natural gas infrastructure modernization project

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November 5, 2026) – Rhode Island Energy (RIE) is nearing the completion of a major natural gas infrastructure modernization project in Providence that will help ensure the continued safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to customers across the Ocean State.

Beginning in 2025, the project has focused on strengthening two critical natural gas mains located in downtown Providence serving nearly 25,000 local homes and businesses in the area. On a larger scale, the gas mains being serviced include RIE’s largest natural gas distribution main, which serves as a critical part of the system delivering natural gas to hundreds of thousands of Rhode Islanders throughout the state. Additionally, the project also involves enhancements to facilities that regulate gas pressure to help ensure the safe and efficient operation of the natural gas system.

Rather than replacing the existing pipelines, RIE instead used an innovative pipe-lining technology that strengthens the infrastructure from within. Using this technology, RIE is extending the life of the existing mains, improving system reliability, and reducing the amount of excavation and disruption that would typically be required with a full pipeline replacement.

"The reinforcement of this critical infrastructure represents an important and innovative investment in the safety and reliability of our natural gas system,” said Kathy Castro, Vice President of Gas Operations at RIE. “This work will help ensure we can continue to safely and reliably deliver natural gas to the homes and businesses we serve every day."

This project is expected to be completed in 2027.
