ALLENTOWN, Pa.

The continuing hot, humid weather drove electricity use by customers of PPL Electric Utilities to a new summer record Tuesday afternoon (7/26), based on preliminary figures.

Customers used an estimated 7,024 megawatt-hours of electricity for the hour ending at 5 p.m. (EDT).

"We plan and prepare for weather extremes so our customers can count on reliable electric service when they need it most," said David G. Cole, general manager-Asset Management for PPL Electric Utilities.

He added that PPL Electric Utilities always encourages customers to use energy wisely, but in these conditions they should use what they need to protect their health and safety.

The PJM Interconnection, which coordinates electricity generation and the high-voltage electric power system in 13 states and the District of Columbia, expects power supplies to be adequate to meet the increased demand. No extra measures have been necessary to maintain electric reliability.

The all-time record for electricity use by customers of PPL Electric Utilities is still 7,274 megawatt-hours on Dec. 20, 2004.

PPL Electric Utilities serves 1.3 million customers in 29 counties of eastern and central Pennsylvania.
