ALLENTOWN, Pa.

Even though Earth Day is only 24 hours long on April 22, PPL Project Earth™ has environmental events planned starting this week and taking the celebration all the way to the first weekend in June.

"PPL places a high priority on environmental compliance and stewardship. It's something that is on everyone's shoulders everyday," said Robert Barkanic, PPL's manager of Environmental Management. "But it's nice to take time out, focus on the environment and recognize work that is being done to preserve our planet for future generations.

"We work hard to balance our commitment to the environment with our obligation to provide affordable, reliable power," he said.

PPL recently ranked third among 26 leading energy companies in a national survey covering environmental management and other non-traditional investment factors. New York-based Innovest Strategic Value Advisors Inc. conducted the survey.

Investment advisors have noted that there is a direct correlation between environmental performance and stock market performance, because good environmental performance is an indication of excellent management, Barkanic said.

PPL Project Earth is the company's effort to promote environmental education and focus its resources on generating and delivering energy in an environmentally responsible manner.

The programs under PPL Project Earth are designed to educate about energy alternatives, improve the corporation's environmental performance and offer recreational and environmental education opportunities in the communities in which PPL does business.
