PROVIDENCE, R.I. (August 4, 2026) – Rhode Island Energy (RIE) is continuing to strengthen its electric system through targeted investments designed to reduce outages and improve reliability for customers across the Ocean State.

Earlier this month, recent improvements to the energy grid helped keep the power on for nearly 5,000 Rhode Islanders during three separate outage events. Using automated technology or "smart switches" that can quickly detect issues and redirect power, RIE was able to automatically restore service on average in about one minute in each instance. These enhancements are part of the company’s broader efforts to deliver safe, reliable service to homes and businesses across Rhode Island.

“Our customers depend on reliable service every day, and we’re focused on delivering exactly that,” said Michele Leone, Chief Operating Officer at Rhode Island Energy. “By continuing to invest in our electric system, we’re reducing the number of customers affected by outages and restoring service faster when interruptions do occur.”

Exemplified by the success of PPL in Pennsylvania, these investments are helping to create a more resilient grid that can better withstand everyday challenges and respond to outages more efficiently.
