Rhode Island Energy to enhance and upgrade electrical infrastructure in Newport

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 2, 2025) – As part of the city of Newport’s $128 million capital improvement plan, Rhode Island Energy (RIE) will be performing a series of upgrades to electric infrastructure that will increase capacity, enhance reliability, and

In the Long Wharf area of Newport, RIE crews have already begun this work, installing new assets to provide increased electrical capacity to the city’s upgraded sewage pump station.  

Included in the pump station improvements, RIE will be working to upgrade and extend existing underground electrical feeders in the Long Wharf and America’s Cup Ave. area to support the increased electric load. These upgrades will replace older electric assets, and the design is expected to improve reliability for the pump station and the overall system.
