LG&E, KU Issue Request for Proposals for Capacity and Energy
Proposals must be submitted by November 2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company have issued a request for proposals to the power supply market to purchase up to 700 megawatts of generation supply to meet customers' future energy needs.

The companies will consider short-term proposals, ranging from one to five years, and long-term proposals, ranging from 10 to 20 years, from power suppliers for firm capacity and energy that qualify as a Designated Network Resource either as an owned asset for LG&E and KU or through a Power Purchase Agreement.

The companies may acquire more or less than 700 megawatts, and may consider combining the capacity and energy from multiple sources. As always, the companies will consider all types of generation technology, and any responses selected will be based on the lowest reasonable cost means of meeting customers' long-term energy needs.

The capacity and energy delivery would begin after January 1, 2015, and later start dates will be considered.

"We want to find the best overall long-term solution for our customers. We will consider all proposals that are reliable, feasible and represent the lowest reasonable cost means of meeting our customers' needs," said David Sinclair, vice president, Energy Marketing.

As a result of the stricter environmental regulations, LG&E and KU will retire coal-fired generation at three older power stations — Cane Run, Green River and Tyrone — by the end of 2015. As part of this RFP, the companies will also evaluate new generation supply as an alternative to installing additional emission control equipment on units 1 and 2 at the companies' Brown Generating Station. To make-up for part of the capacity and energy that will be retired, the companies are building a new 640-megawatt natural gas combined cycle unit at Cane Run.

All proposals must be submitted by November 2, 2012 by 4 p.m. EDT. A copy of the RFP can be found at www.lge-ku.com/rfp.
