FRANKFORT, KY. — Kentucky State University is pleased to announce that Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company have donated $500,000 to KSU’s scholarship fundraising efforts.

The funds will provide scholarships to students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at KSU, a four-year liberal arts institution founded in 1886 in Frankfort, Ky.

“Success in today’s global economy begins in the classroom, which is why LG&E and KU are pleased to make a significant contribution to one of Kentucky’s most important institutions of higher learning,” said Laura Douglas, vice president of Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs at LG&E and KU. “When it comes to building economic vitality and quality of life, we realize education is the answer.”

LG&E and KU, in addition to other donors, will make a formal check presentation on April 13 during KSU’s ninth annual President’s Scholarship Gala, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at William Exum Center located on Kentucky State University’s campus. During the Gala, KSU will acknowledge gifts for scholarships and student support totaling $1.4 million. More than 450 supporters will attend the Gala, making it one of the university’s largest events of the year.

“Donations from partners like LG&E and KU are helping KSU to push the boundaries of expectation and are opening new opportunities for progress in our classrooms, our neighborhoods and our world,” said Dr. Mary Evans Sias, president of KSU.

LG&E and KU, as well as the LG&E and KU Foundation, have a long history of supporting education on many levels statewide. Examples include scholarship programs; direct support of primary schools, colleges and universities; and a full slate of initiatives to boost education attainment across Kentucky.
